Tomorrow is Yesterday

The first novel written in English by a Belarusian, reissued for the author’s centenary.

In a small Belarusian village during the Second World War, the people are trapped between two occupiers, the Soviets and the Nazis. Mary Karaway is a young teacher whose life is shattered by the violence, and she has to find a way to survive in a world where every choice is dangerous.

Kastuś Akuła (1925–2005) lived through the German occupation of Belarus before emigrating to Canada. He published Tomorrow is Yesterday in Canada in 1968. It was his only novel in English and one of very few uncensored accounts of wartime Belarus written from inside the Belarusian experience.

His prose is direct, sometimes archaic, and rough at the edges. It reads as the testimony of someone who lived through it, not a polished modern reconstruction: immediate, imperfect and unmistakably real.

Reissued to mark 100 years since Akuła’s birth, this edition returns a forgotten Canadian voice to print.
