Maksim Haretski’s Two Souls in English and in the original Belarusian, together in one volume.

A new edition of the first existentialist novel written in Belarusian (1919), pairing Olya Ianovskaia’s English translation with Haretski’s original text. For readers learning either language, for students and teachers of Belarusian literature, and for anyone who wants to read the novel as it was written.

The book is a tête-bêche flip book: open it from one cover to read the English translation, turn it over and open it from the other cover to read the Belarusian original. Each language gets its own front cover and its own beginning.

Belarus, 1917–1919: as revolution sweeps the country, Ignat, torn between private ambition and duty to his people, has to decide who he really is. The novel’s bold critique of Bolshevism kept it suppressed for decades; Haretski was executed by the Soviet secret police in 1938.
