A facsimile of the first edition (Grodno, 1895) of a classic of Belarusian ethnography.
Adam Bogdanovich (1862–1940), ethnographer, folklorist and father of the poet Maksim Bahdanovich, gathered his material himself in the villages of central Belarus. He shows how the pre-Christian worldview lived on in rites, charms, beliefs and folk healing: the veneration of fire, stones, water and trees; the soul and the ancestors; household spirits; the sun cult and the calendar festivals of Kaliady and Kupalle; sorcerers and witches.

Адам Багдановіч (1862–1940) — этнограф, фалькларыст, бацька паэта Максіма Багдановіча — сам збіраў матэрыял у вёсках цэнтральнай Беларусі. Ён паказвае, як у абрадах, замовах, павер’ях і народным лячэнні жылі перажыткі дахрысціянскага светапогляду: ўшанаванне агню, камянёў, вады і дрэваў, вераванні пра душу і продкаў, хатнія духі, культ сонца і каляндарныя святы — Каляды і Купалле, — чараўнікі і ведзьмы.
